Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation – Connecting Community Through Recreation
“Recreation is no longer simply having fun. Rather, it involves the kind of America we have and want to have, and the kind of people we are and are likely to become.” Laurence S. Rockefeller, son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
Recreation is a key component of economic development for a community. Business owners and employees look at the recreational opportunities that exist in a community as a key part of making decisions to move into the community. Recreation is an important part of the foundation for quality of life acitivies.
Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation teamed up with the community to receive hotel-motel tax as a result of a community vote in 1998. MCRF uses these funds along with grants, donations and fundraiser events to support the facilitation of recreation for the community.
What is MCRF?
Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation (MCRF) is a 501(c)3 organization formed in the fall of 1998. MCRF is made up of a 13-member board and includes 5 appointed and 10 elected, at-large board members. Membership to MCRF is open to all recreation affiliated groups and free of membership fees. An annual meeting is held for membership in which all recreational leaders are invited. Quarterly executive board meetings are held. MCRF has a paid full-time staff of three. Part-time paid staff are added on a seasonal basis and volunteers are used throughout the year for programs, projects, events and leadership.
Who is served by MCRF?
MCRF’s mission is “To Facilitate and Promote Recreation in the Mahaska Community.” Our vision is to encourage community unison by creating opportunities that allow all youth to participate in recreation. We have recently added initiatives to service or partner with multi-generational recreational activities along the community trail as well. Our programs and facilities serve all of the Mahaska community, even reaching out beyond county borders, with local community members and visitors participating in these recreational activities.
